Tunstall Case Study - Speech Module ATE

Tunstall introduced a new speech module to their range of products and had a requirement for a new ATE fixture and test software to be used for functional testing.

System Design
Hardware Components
  • National Instruments PCI-4461 DSA card
  • 'Bed of Nails' type fixture
  • Eurocard with custom electronics
  • Alpine MRP130 audio amplifier
  • Agilent 34980A DMM
  • Agilent N6700B quad PSU

Software Components
  • National Instruments LabVIEW™
  • NI TestStand™
  • NI Sound & Vibration Toolkit

The system incorporates NI DSA technology to allow accurate acoustic measurements to characterise the loud speaker and microphone combination fitted to the speech module.

Design Challenges

The system is a functional test system requiring interaction with the UUT both electronically (RS232) and also physically via pneumatic fingers. Another requirement was for the UUT to be fooled into thinking that it was connected to a telephone network this was through custom electronics (loads and current sources) mounted on a Eurocard. Fibre optics and an ECT LED checker were used to test the colour and intensity of the LED’s.

System Results
  • Accurate and repeatable acoustic characterisation
  • Automatic functional testing of speech modules
  • Easy to use operator interface
  • Automatic report generation
